Seattle must be more than happy that the top offensive tackle in draft has come to them, and rather unexpectedly. In Russel Okung they have a blind-side pass protector who will look after their quarterbacks. Well done Seahawks.

Seahawks Take Flight

Shaun Alexander woke from his post season slumber to reign havoc on shell-shocked Carolina Panthers. Matt Hasselbeck added to Panther's woes with top class display that will take them to the Super Bowl for the first time in their thirty year history - to clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Seattle continually frustrated Carolina's Steve Smith and Jake Delhomme - who were potentially key players for the Panthers - and in the end took a 34-14 victory.

Mike Holmgren, Seattle coach, went to back-to-back Super Bowls with the Green Bay Packers and won the championship in 1996. He becomes only the fifth coach to lead two franchises to a Super Bowl.

Shaun Alexander steamrolled Carolina, rushing 132 yards on a season-high 34 carries. He scored two one yard touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters. Hasselbeck completed twenty from twenty-eight passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns - with no turnovers.

Running Back Shaun Alexander was out for most of the game against the Redskins with a concussion. Foster missed a chunk of the game against Chicago with a broken ankle. But neither teams' needed their stars to win.

The good news for Seattle is that Shaun Alexander is likely to play against Carolina but Foster will not take his place in that team.

Carolina have proved to be a tough road team going 8-2 - with the last two road wins coming in the playoffs. Delhomme is 5-1 in the play-offs with four of those wins on the road. So the Panthers are in with a big shout.

As with Denver, Seattle are 9-0 at home this season - Qwest Field is proving a tough place to play at in the NFL. But Alexander will need to produce the goods.

The Seahawks need to stop Carolina's running game and need to smother to a degree their passing game. If they can succeed in doing that, then they should run out with another long overdue victory in the playoffs.

The Seattle Seahawks (13-3) had the best record in the NFC this season and got a first-round playoff bye and home-field advantage. They are hosts Saturday to the defensive-minded Washington Redskins as they go after their first playoff victory since 1984.
A lot of there success is down to one man - Shaun Alexander.

It isn't that easy to explain what Shaun Alexander does so well, nothing really...and then again everything. Perhaps there is nothing that defines him - nothing that stands out as with other running backs. He is perhaps like Pete Sampras in tennis terms - who possesses a solid all round game - but without the top spin of Borg or the serve and volley of McEnroe...

So what does Alexander have? Well, figures that's what. He owns the league-leading total of 1,880 rushing yards, the 28 total touchdowns that set an NFL single season record, the 89 rushing touchdowns in 96 games that leave him behind only eleven players. He carried 370 times this season and averaged 5.1 yards, leading the Seahawks to their best record. He had a touchdown run of 88 yards, which was the second longest in the NFL and beat all rushers with fifty-four carries of ten yards or more. He has also managed a run of ten yards or more in fifty-five consecutive games, currently the NFL's longest active run.

Enough said.

Seahawks Focus On Home Field

The Seattle Seahawks have are now focussing on home-field advantage for the duration of the playoffs. They are very likely to do that, since their remaining opponents are the San Francisco 49ers, who visit Qwest Field on Sunday. Then its Tennessee, Indianapolis - who will on paper present the toughest obstacle - and finally Green Bay. Beating San Francisco would give Seattle a 6-0 record in NFC West games and at least a one game cushion in the conference race.

The Seahawks are 16-point favorites, even though the 49ers came within two points of forcing overtime against Seattle earlier in the season. Seattle won 27-25 in a game that shouldn't have been that close.

"The game in San Francisco was as close a game as we have had all year and still managed to win it," Mike Holmgren said. "We have to stay after it. We accomplished our first goal of winning the division. Now, there are other things ahead for us."

The 49ers are bringing in first-round pick Alex Smith to take over for Ken Dorsey, who was unable to maintain the level of play he showed in the second half against Seattle last time. Smith has talent but very little experience.

Big Game For Seattle

The Seahawks can take a leap towards winning the NFC West if they can overcoome St. Louis in Seattle on Sunday. The Seahawks holds a two-game lead in the division. Beating the Rams who are currently 4-4, would open a three game lead with seven to play, and give Seattle a sweep of its primary rival in the division. The Seahawks have already beaten the Rams in St. Louis.

"It's a huge football game," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Monday. "Since we've been here, this is as big as any game we'll play."

The Rams beat the Seahawks three times last season. St Louis remain a threat because Joe Vitt seems to favor the running game. The Rams' Steven Jackson has given Seattle problems, but only when given enough carries.

The Seahawks have an improved defense but St Louis have beaten the Seahawks' in recent seasons and Seattle can not take the game for granted. Last season, the Rams ate up a 17 point fourth-quarter deficit to win in Seattle.

"I like the fact we're at home," Holmgren said. "Our fans have been great. These are the games you like to coach in, you like to play in. It should be a heckuva deal."

The Seahawks have won eighteen of their last twenty-one regular-season home games. They have won four games in a row and six of the last seven (a last-second field goal off the upright against the Redskins prevented Seattle from putting together seven consecutive victories).

Hamlin Out For Season

Seattle Seahawks' Ken Hamlin will be out for the season due to injuries suffered last month in a fight outside a nightclub. Hamlin was placed on the 'non-football injury' - Tuesday.

Hamlin fractured his skull and has a blood clot near the brain - from the attack Oct. 17 in which he was beaten with a street sign.

Police are investigating the fight and the shooting death of one of the men involved.

Seahawks players have been ordered to stay away from the Pioneer Square district at night by Holmgren.

Seatlle play Arizona on Sunday.

Bye Week Repeat For Seattle?

Last season the Seahawks had three practices in their bye week and they then went on to lose three games in a row, turning a 3-0 start into a 3-3 record.

Coach Mike Holmgren is taking a different approach this year, he promised his team a full week off as long as the Seahawks defeated the Texans and The Cowboys. He remained true to his word after his team beat both Texas teams.

So the players went home on Monday night. The plan is for everyone to be back in Seattle by Sunday with practice scheduled to resume on Monday. The Seahawks next game is on November 6 against Arizona - on the road.

It remains to be seen if this new approach to rest over the bye week will allow Seattle to finish the season strongly - with their next games against Arizona, St. Louis and San Francisco, the Seahawks have a good chance.
